Machine-vision and battery names led while the Japanese and German motion-component suppliers set the laggards, with Schaeffler weakest after its charge-laden Q3.
The leader was Ultralife (ULBI), up 3.8% to $6.29 on the batteries-and-power chokepoint — the energy rung every mobile manipulator is gated by. The move was pre-earnings positioning: Ultralife reports third-quarter results before the open on Thursday, October 22, carrying a record backlog near $117.5 million weighted toward government-defense and dual-use programs. There was no announcement on the session, so the read is interest in a domestic cell supplier ahead of a print, not a fresh order.
The laggard was Schaeffler's ADR (SFFLY), down 5.2% to $6.50 on its last session, on the linear-motion-and-precision chokepoint — the bearings, screws and rails that convert motor torque into controlled motion. The weakness is a post-earnings drift: Schaeffler's October 13 third-quarter print landed within guidance (group EBIT margin 4.2%, free cash flow €260 million) but carried a roughly €220 million one-time E-Mobility cleanup charge, and management confirmed, rather than raised, its full-year outlook. The thinly-traded ADR exaggerated the move. It sat at the bottom of a broadly soft motion-component rung dominated by Japanese suppliers on their last session: Harmonic Drive (HSYDF) −4.3% to $33.00, Yaskawa (YASKY) −4.2% to $53.08, THK (THKLY) −2.6% to $18.96 and NSK (NPSKY) −2.4% to $13.22 — the precision-gear and linear-guide strait that gates every humanoid joint.
The offsetting strength was in sensing and perception. The machine-vision and touch rung led: Novanta (NOVT) +3.1% to $135.59, Cognex (CGNX) +2.9% to $56.77 and Allegro MicroSystems (ALGM) +2.2% to $33.91, the position- and current-sensing suppliers. The platforms-and-integrators rung firmed — Symbotic (SYM) +1.7% to $39.69 and Tesla (TSLA) +1.5% to $373.71 — while the US actuator names softened with their Japanese peers: Regal Rexnord (RRX) −1.0% to $156.03 and Fanuc (FANUY) −0.2%. Edge-AI compute anchor NVIDIA (NVDA) slipped 0.3% to $216.47.
The calendar is earnings- and policy-dense and lands squarely on the motion chokepoint. Hyundai Motor reports Q3 around October 27 and Timken on October 30, both reads on the actuator-and-bearing rung, before Schaeffler's nine-month results on November 3. China's one-year suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls expires November 10 — the magnet-supply cliff that would reprice every actuator in the stack. Into December, the Humanoids Summit Silicon Valley (December 1-2), the analyst-estimated Boston Dynamics IPO-decision window, and the targeted availability of NVIDIA's GR00T N2 humanoid foundation model frame the platform-layer catalysts.
