A hot CPI print left the robotics basket without a single genuine gainer — Unity -11.2%, Serve and Symbotic down 7-9%, the Japanese motion-control rung off 5-7% — as high-beta automation names took the brunt of the risk-off.

The robotics basket had no genuine gainer Wednesday — a clean read on a risk-off session where a hotter-than-expected September CPI delivered the worst day for stocks since July. The nominal "leader," software name PTC (PTC), fell 0.2% to $193.64; it was simply the smallest decliner among the liquid names, and the only positive prints in the basket came from thin, non-trading Japanese ADRs we exclude as noise. When the least-bad name in a vertical is down and the entire tape is red, the session is about the cost of capital, not robotics — and the automation names, which sit at the high-beta intersection of industrial capex and AI, took it on the chin.

The laggard was Unity Software (U), down 11.2% to $41.40 — the simulation-and-digital-twin layer that robotics developers lean on, and a high-multiple software name with exactly the duration profile the market was selling. Right behind it, the embodied-robotics pure plays cratered: Serve Robotics (SERV) -9.1% to $3.44 and Symbotic (SYM) -7.3% to $37.90, both cash-burning bets on deployment timelines that a higher discount rate punishes directly. Tesla (TSLA), whose Optimus program anchors the humanoid thesis, slipped 2.2% to $367.16, and NVIDIA (NVDA), whose Isaac/GR00T stack is the robot-brain chokepoint, fell 3.2% to $221.30.

The move ran deepest through the physical chokepoint the vertical is built on — the precision actuators, harmonic drives, bearings and motion control that no humanoid ships without, and that remain concentrated in a handful of Japanese and specialty suppliers. THK (THKLY) fell 6.7% to $20.58, Yaskawa (YASKY) 5.3% to $58.10, motion-control maker Allient (ALNT) 6.0% to $99.13, test-equipment name Teradyne (TER) 5.5% to $359.44 and STMicroelectronics (STM) 5.4% to $46.90. The rare-earth magnet rung that feeds every servo motor sold too: MP Materials (MP) -5.8% to $39.95 and Amprius (AMPX) -6.5% to $8.00. Moog (MOG.A), a precision-actuation name with defense revenue, held up best at -0.9% to $370.26.

The near calendar is dense with venues where the humanoid roadmap gets set: RoboBusiness (Santa Clara, Oct 19-21) opens next week, Hyundai reports Q3 on October 27 and Timken on October 30, and the Humanoids Summit (Dec 1-2) and NVIDIA's targeted GR00T N2 foundation-model availability close the year. The magnet chokepoint carries its own clock — China's suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls expires November 10. Each is a fundamentals catalyst, but on a day when nothing in the basket could stay green, the macro owned the tape.
