The permanent-magnet rung dragged the robotics basket — USA Rare Earth -4.6% as the rare-earth names pulled back — leaving FANUC's ADR, +1.7%, the modest exception on a broadly soft tape.

FANUC's ADR (FANUY) was the robotics basket's modest leader Tuesday, up 1.7% to $19.58 — the kind of small green close that only stands out on a day when most of the sector was red. There was no FANUC-specific catalyst; the Japanese factory-automation major simply held while the supply rungs around it softened. The edge-compute silicon that holds the next session's narrative was firm but unremarkable — Qualcomm (QCOM) +1.4% to $176.86, NVIDIA (NVDA) +1.0% to $228.52 — tracking the broad chip rebound rather than any robotics demand signal. Underneath, the vertical's hardest chokepoint was the one that fell.

The laggard was USA Rare Earth (USAR), down 4.6% to $11.28, as the rare-earth-magnet names pulled back across the board — the sintered neodymium-iron-boron that every servo and humanoid actuator depends on, and the supply strait most exposed to China policy. Lynas (LYSCF) -4.7% to $8.10, Energy Fuels (UUUU) -4.0% to $9.27, and MP Materials (MP) -2.1% to $42.43 moved with it. There was no fresh trigger; after a strong run on China's export-control tightening, Tuesday was a give-back day for the magnet rung that underwrites robot torque density.

The motion-control and precision-reducer names — the other physical chokepoint, where harmonic drives and bearings gate how precisely a robot can move — were soft too: NSK's ADR (NPSKY) -3.2% to $13.59, Yaskawa (YASKY) -1.6% to $61.32, Harmonic Drive (HSYDF) -1.5% to $39.14. Machine-vision and design-tool names leaned lower as well: Cognex (CGNX) -2.9% to $60.01, Synopsys (SNPS) -1.6% to $494.51. Among the service and humanoid plays, Serve Robotics (SERV) fell 3.3% to $3.79, Tesla (TSLA) slipped 0.7% to $375.23, and Symbotic (SYM) edged up 0.3% to $40.89. The read: the basket's software and silicon held, while the materials and precision-mechanics rungs that actually build the machine gave ground.

The calendar is dense and near. RoboBusiness 2026 opens in Santa Clara October 19-21 with a humanoid-for-industry track, the sector's next showcase. Earnings then roll through the motion-control suppliers: Hyundai Motor (Q3, ~October 27), Timken (October 30), and Schaeffler (nine-month results, November 3). The chokepoint catalyst that most directly governs Tuesday's laggard is November 10, when China's one-year suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls expires. Further out, the Boston Dynamics Nasdaq IPO decision window and the Humanoids Summit both sit in early December.
