Daily brief · 2026-10-09
The automation complex sold off with semis and risk — STMicro off 6.2% and the Japanese motion-control names down 3-5% — leaving Unity's 1.0% the vertical's only material gain.
The robotics basket was a near-shutout. A Financial Times report that OpenAI's annualized revenue was running near $50bn — below the roughly $70bn investors had assumed — cracked the AI trade, knocked a gauge of chipmakers down about 3.4%, and dragged the sensing, compute and precision-motion rungs that make up the automation supply chain. The rare green was Unity Software (U), up 1.0% to $45.89 — the simulation and digital-twin software layer where humanoid policies are trained before they reach hardware, a name with little exposure to the capex unwind. Moog (MOG.A), on the precision-actuation rung, was the only other notable gainer, up 0.7% to $362.92.
The laggard was STMicroelectronics (STM), down 6.2% to $52.71. STMicro is a motion-control and power-semiconductor supplier — the chip rung that gates robot actuation and sensing — and it fell with the broad semiconductor selloff rather than on any company news; its next print is Oct 29. The structural read is that a robot's bill of materials is semiconductor-heavy, so a semis-led risk-off day hits the vertical's cost-and-supply chokepoint directly.
The precision-motion chokepoint — the harmonic drives, bearings and servos that gate a humanoid's degrees of freedom — was broadly red: Harmonic Drive Systems (HSYDF) −5.5% to $38.76, Yaskawa (YASKY) −4.9% to $59.43, and FANUC (FANUY) −3.0% to $18.80 on their own sessions. The sensing and vision rung fell too: Novanta (NOVT) −5.1% to $136.33 and Teradyne (TER) −3.2% to $398.72. Warehouse-autonomy name Symbotic (SYM) slid 2.9% to $42.06, Hyundai's Seoul line (005380.KS), parent of Boston Dynamics, closed 3.4% lower, and Tesla (TSLA) eased 0.7% to $375.00. NVIDIA (NVDA), the robot-brain compute rung, fell 2.9% to $230.48.
The next catalysts favor the application and materials rungs. RoboBusiness 2026 (Santa Clara, Oct 19–21), with a humanoid-for-industry track, is the nearest venue. China's one-year suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls expires Nov 10 — bearing directly on the permanent-magnet chokepoint behind every servo and actuator in the vertical. The Humanoids Summit (Silicon Valley, Dec 1–2) and the targeted year-end availability of NVIDIA's GR00T N2 humanoid foundation model follow, the software-side catalysts for the sim-to-real rung Unity sits on.
