Synopsys surged on an Investor Day of AI design deals while Nidec's audit disclaimer cratered the precision-motor rung.

Synopsys (SNPS) led the vertical, up 12.8% to $490.54, after an Investor Day that reset the growth story: a multiyear custom-chip partnership with Amazon, a collaboration with OpenAI on an AI-driven design platform, and a fiscal-2027 outlook above the Street — revenue guided to $11.10–11.20 billion against roughly $10.81 billion expected, and EPS of $19.04–19.12 versus $17.81. HSBC upgraded the stock and lifted its target from $490 to $700, and management flagged roughly $1 billion of buybacks. Synopsys sits on the EDA chokepoint — the design-tool layer every robotics and physical-AI chip is taped out through — so an AI-design acceleration flows into the whole stack. Design-software peers rode along: PTC +4.4% to $146.47 and Unity +6.5% to $43.61.

The laggard was Nidec's ADR (NJDCY), down 9.1% to $3.65, as the Tokyo line fell as much as ~20% after auditor PwC Japan issued a disclaimer of opinion on the company's delayed full-year results. Nidec booked roughly ¥632 billion in writedowns plus ¥482.5 billion in charges tied to accounting irregularities, and the refusal to sign off raises the prospect of a Tokyo delisting. Nidec is a core supplier on the precision-motor-and-actuator rung — the muscle of any robot or humanoid — so a governance rupture at that node is a genuine supply-chain concern, not just a stock event.

The rest of the motion-and-automation basket held up well. Teradyne rose 3.7% to $415.79, Allient +3.9% to $115.95, TE Connectivity +3.2% to $217.76, Cognex +2.6% to $62.22, Symbotic +2.6% to $43.17, Harmonic Drive +2.6% to $41.42, Yaskawa +2.1% to $59.89, and THK +2.0% to $21.43 — the actuation and machine-vision rungs broadly green. The weak company kept Nidec company at the bearing-and-magnet end: Schaeffler's ADR −5.7% to $7.14, and the NdFeB-magnet chokepoint sagged with Lynas −8.0% to $8.85, MP Materials −2.5% to $46.09, and USA Rare Earth −2.0% to $13.80. Tesla was roughly flat at $354.11.

The calendar builds toward humanoids. RoboBusiness (Santa Clara, Oct 19–21) is the next industry stage, with Nvidia's Isaac GR00T reference humanoid slated to ship from Unitree later this year. China's one-year suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls expires Nov 10 — the direct read on the magnet rung that lagged Thursday — the Humanoids Summit follows Dec 1–2, and the DFARS ban on Chinese-melted or -fabricated NdFeB and SmCo magnets in defense systems takes effect Jan 1, 2027.
