A physical-AI selloff hit the edge-compute, battery, and rare-earth-magnet rungs, while Nvidia's robot-brains layer held green on its buyback expansion.
Nvidia (NVDA) led the vertical Monday, up 1.7% to $228.86, after adding $150 billion to its buyback and reaffirming long-run growth guidance. Nvidia owns the robot-brains-and-edge-AI-compute rung here — plus the simulation-and-training-software layer through Isaac and its GR00T humanoid foundation-model roadmap — and its outperformance while the physical hardware sold off is the session's structural read: capital favored the compute-and-software rung over the actuation, sensing, and power rungs that still have to be built.
The laggard was Enovix (ENVX), down 11.0% to $2.56 on the batteries-and-power-density chokepoint — the same story that dragged it in the drone basket: bearish analyst sentiment on its silicon-anode roadmap, ongoing cash burn, and a pipeline that is still largely non-firm. Energy density gates humanoid runtime, but the market repriced the most speculative battery name hardest as the 10-year yield hit 5.24%, its highest since 2007.
The broader tape was a physical-AI give-back. The edge-AI-compute rung led losses: Qualcomm (QCOM) −7.2% to $187.48 as its Samsung 2nm foundry talks stayed stuck on pricing and yields, and Ambarella (AMBA) −5.5%. The rare-earth-magnets-and-motor-materials rung sold off on US-China thaw hopes ahead of an expected Trump-Xi summit, which undercut the scarcity trade: MP Materials (MP) −4.9% to $46.45 and USA Rare Earth (USAR) −5.0%. The actuation and platform rungs followed — Schaeffler (SFFLY) −7.2% on bearings and linear motion, Knightscope (KSCP) −10.0% and Symbotic (SYM) −3.4% on platforms, Tesla (TSLA) −3.9% to $357.45 on the Optimus actuator-and-sensor rung, and Unity (U) −4.1% on simulation software.
The catalysts ahead are demand- and supply-chain-driven. Nvidia's Isaac GR00T reference humanoid is slated to ship from Unitree in late 2026, and RoboBusiness runs October 19-21 in Santa Clara. Schaeffler reports nine-month results November 3 and Hyundai Motor around October 27 — reads on the industrial-automation and vehicle-platform rungs. Two magnet clocks matter for actuation: China's rare-earth export-control suspension expires November 10, and the DFARS ban on Chinese-melted or -fabricated NdFeB and SmCo magnets in defense systems takes effect January 1, 2027.
