Cognex fell 5% on its $500M RealSense acquisition while precision-motion peer Novanta led a broad automation bid.

Novanta (NOVT) led the vertical, up 7.3% to $144.17, with no company-specific catalyst; the move rode a sector-wide bid across precision-motion, encoder and photonics names serving medical-device, robotics and advanced-manufacturing customers. Novanta occupies the actuation-and-sensing chokepoint the vertical maps — the precision motion control and optical feedback that turn a robot's compute into accurate physical work — so it trades as a proxy for that rung's demand outlook.

Cognex (CGNX) was the laggard, down 4.9% to $58.97, on its own announcement: a $500M definitive agreement to acquire RealSense, the robotic 3D-perception and depth-sensing developer. Machine vision is the perception chokepoint that lets a robot see and locate, and the deal deepens Cognex's position there — but after a strong year-to-date run, the market read the price and integration risk as a near-term negative rather than an accretive expansion. The sell-off was deal-driven skepticism, not a demand signal.

The broader tape was firmly risk-on across the automation supply chain. Teradyne (TER) +4.5% to $398.69 rode both its robotics unit and the semiconductor-test bid; Symbotic (SYM) +2.5% to $45.07, Synopsys (SNPS) +1.8%, and Lattice (LSCC) +4.5% carried the compute-and-design rung. Tesla (TSLA) added 1.0% to $378.90 on Optimus optionality. The mechanical motion rung was mixed and quiet — Timken (TKR) +0.6%, RBC Bearings (RBC) +1.5%, Allegro (ALGM) flat. The rare-earth magnet names, the upstream constraint on every actuator, held green: MP Materials (MP) +2.1%, USA Rare Earth (USAR) +1.3%, with Energy Fuels (UUUU) −1.3% the exception.

The catalysts ahead are product- and policy-driven. ABB's robotics divestiture to SoftBank is expected to close mid-to-late 2026, reshaping industrial-arm ownership. NVIDIA's Isaac GR00T reference humanoid is slated to ship from Unitree late this year, and RoboBusiness (Oct 19–21) plus the Humanoids Summit (Dec 1–2) are the next demonstration venues. Structurally, the Jan 1, 2027 DFARS ban on Chinese-melted or -fabricated NdFeB and SmCo magnets in defense systems tightens the actuator-magnet chokepoint — the reason the rare-earth names trade with the robots.
