A federal critical-minerals package drove the magnet chokepoint, with USA Rare Earth up 12.6% and Tesla up 5.1%, while Allient's post-earnings derating deepened.
The rare-earth-magnet chokepoint led robotics on policy. USA Rare Earth closed +12.6% at $19.26 after the Department of Energy committed $500 million across seven domestic critical-mineral processing, battery and recycling projects, and the broader complex ran with it — MP Materials +9.1% to $60.05, Energy Fuels +8.9% to $15.14 — amplified by a rotation into hard assets as long-dated Treasury yields pressed toward multi-decade highs. For humanoids and industrial robots this is the strait that matters most: sintered NdFeB magnets are the irreducible input to frameless motors and integrated actuators, and the DFARS ban on Chinese-melted or -fabricated magnets in defense systems takes effect January 1, 2027, forcing the supply chain toward exactly these names.
The platforms layer joined the risk-on move. Tesla rose +5.1% to $362.86 into its targeted summer Optimus V3 reveal and Fremont production start, and sidewalk-delivery operator Serve Robotics gained +5.1% to $4.98. These are the integrator bets, but the day's leadership underneath them was the materials — a useful reminder that the platforms are only as scalable as the motor-and-magnet chokepoint that feeds them.
The laggard was a single-name derating. Allient fell −3.6% to $95.84, extending an August slide even though its Q2 was strong — revenue up ~10% to $153.8 million, record 34.9% gross margin, and EPS of $0.80 well ahead of the ~$0.61 consensus. The selling is a valuation-and-capital-allocation story rather than an operational one: Allient sits squarely in the actuators-and-motors chokepoint, and the market is repricing the multiple, not the backlog. Teradyne, on the automated-test side, also eased −1.9% to $375.74.
The calendar is busy into autumn. NVIDIA and Ambarella both report fiscal Q2 on August 26, THK reports Q2 on August 31 (the linear-motion strait), and Tesla's Optimus V3 reveal is the near-term platform catalyst. Further out, the ABB Robotics divestiture to SoftBank is expected to close by late 2026, RoboBusiness runs in Santa Clara October 19–21, and the November 10 expiry of China's suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls is the next hard test for the magnet supply chain that led today. The through-line: robotics scales on motors, and motors scale on magnets.
