Daily brief · 2026-08-06
Regal Rexnord cratered 17% on a revenue miss at the motion-control choke, while Amprius led the tape on a drone-and-robotics battery guidance raise and the humanoid actuator names traded mixed into their prints.
Amprius led the vertical, +8.4% to $11.72, on a Q2 that beat and raised the year: revenue of $34.0M (up 126%) and 2026 guidance lifted to at least $140M, driven by military and commercial demand for its silicon-anode cells. For a humanoid and mobile-robot fleet, energy density is the actuation-and-runtime choke — every extra watt-hour per kilogram is more payload or more uptime — so Amprius's raise reads across the physical-AI supply chain, not just drones. It was a clean fundamental move on a day when the vertical's motion-control core was being repriced hard the other way.
That repricing centered on Regal Rexnord, which collapsed −16.7% to $183.24 — the vertical's worst session by a wide margin. Q2 EPS actually beat by a healthy ~16% ($2.99), but revenue of $1.558B missed the ~$1.595B consensus, the company cut its free-cash-flow target to $600M, and the top-line shortfall overwhelmed the profitability beat. Regal sits at the bearings-motors-and-gearing choke — the unglamorous mechanical layer every robot arm and conveyor depends on — so a demand miss there is a read on industrial-automation order velocity, and the market took it as one.
The humanoid actuator complex, the part of the vertical with the most narrative leverage, traded mixed and cautious into a wall of earnings. Nabtesco's ADR (+3.4%) firmed at the precision-reducer choke and Yaskawa (+1.5%) held, but Harmonic Drive's Tokyo line actually slipped ahead of its August 7 result — a reminder that the strain-wave-gear names are trading on expectations, not yet deliveries. Elsewhere the semis-and-vision layer followed the broad tech selloff: Lattice −7.0%, Novanta −4.0%, Teradyne −3.5%, Allegro −2.5%, and Cognex −1.1% at the machine-vision choke, with Symbotic −2.0% and Tesla −1.8% ahead of its Optimus V3 reveal. NVIDIA (+3.4%) was the scarce large-cap green.
The calendar is a gauntlet. Symbotic reported Q3 today (guided $700-720M), Ultralife lands August 7, USA Rare Earth August 10, and Enovix, EnerSys, and Knightscope all report August 12 — the battery, magnet, and security-robot reads in one week. Harmonic Drive's quarterly print (August 7) is the first hard data on humanoid-reducer demand, and Tesla's Optimus V3 reveal with a targeted Fremont production start is pinned to late August. Underneath it, the January 2027 DFARS ban on Chinese-melted rare-earth magnets keeps the domestic-supply names (USA Rare Earth, MP) strategically bid regardless of any single session.
