Tesla's capex-shock miss and STMicro's guidance cut hammered the humanoid-and-motion-silicon chokepoint, leaving the whole robotics basket red.
There was barely a leader to name: Ambarella eked out the best move in the basket, up just 2.2% to $70.51, its edge-vision SoC the one part of the perception stack the market was willing to bid on a day the rest of the board was red. Ambarella sits at the machine-vision chokepoint — the silicon that lets a robot see and localize — and on a session this negative, a +2.2% "win" says more about how far everything else fell than about any fresh catalyst for the name.
STMicroelectronics was the laggard, down 18.7% to $53.49, after Q2 revenue of $3.49B (+26%) and EPS of $0.31 beat, but core EBITDA of $679M missed a ~$798M bar on NXP-sensor writedowns and restructuring, and Q3 revenue was guided to a $3.70B midpoint against ~$3.9B consensus. STM is the motion-and-sensing-silicon chokepoint for the whole vertical — the MEMS and motor-control content inside every actuator and humanoid joint — so a guidance cut there is a direct read on how fast the physical-AI buildout is actually pulling parts. Knightscope fell alongside it, −18.3% to $1.70, on no specific news; the small-cap simply traded with the sector's risk-off.
The de-rating started at the top. Tesla cratered 14.5% to $319.69 after Q2 adjusted EPS of $0.33 badly missed the ~$0.51 estimate, capex jumped 142% to $5.79B, and free cash flow swung to a $1.09B deficit — a print that undercut the Optimus-funded humanoid thesis this basket keys on. The damage spread through the actuation and automation names: Hyundai −7.2% in Seoul to ₩401,000, Serve Robotics −5.1% to $5.04, and Symbotic −4.5% to $40.57, with only Moog (+1.7% to $409.65), Cognex (+1.4% to $63.44), and Teradyne (+1.2% to $373.75) holding green. The chokepoint read is blunt: when the anchor buyer's capex spooks the market and the sensor supplier guides down the same day, the layer between them gets sold.
The calendar offers a fast rebuttal or confirmation. Teradyne reports July 28, PTC and TE Connectivity July 29, Allegro MicroSystems and MP Materials July 30, then Cognex (Aug 5) and Symbotic (Aug 6). The event that matters most for the thesis is Tesla's targeted Optimus V3 reveal and Fremont production start late in the summer — the first hard evidence of whether the humanoid demand that STM's sensors would fill is real volume or still a slide.
