US automation and test names rode the memory-led chip rally — Teradyne jumped 12% — while Japan's precision-motion component ADRs went the other way, with THK the basket's laggard on its Tokyo session.
Teradyne (TER) led the basket, up 12.1% to $374.04, but the move was sector beta, not company news — its Q2 report is not due until July 28. Teradyne owns the semiconductor automated-test chokepoint: no AI accelerator or HBM stack ships without passing through its testers, so when memory ripped on Tuesday, Teradyne ripped with it. The day's driver was Micron's roughly 12% surge on a Bank of America note arguing that cheap open-source Chinese AI models would raise memory demand, plus a Morgan Stanley memory-price call and strong South Korean AI-export data. Test equipment is a direct derivative of that volume, and it repriced accordingly.
The rest of the US automation stack firmed on the same risk-on tape. Symbotic (SYM) rose 5.0% to $42.86 and Serve Robotics (SERV) 3.7% to $5.38 on the warehouse-and-last-mile autonomy theme, while the design-tools chokepoint held with Synopsys (SNPS) +2.8% to $389.07. Tesla (TSLA) added 2.5% to $378.93 ahead of its own Q2 print, and the energy-and-power link EnerSys (ENS) gained 4.7% to $201.31. Korea's Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) rose 4.8% in its Seoul session, carrying its Boston Dynamics humanoid exposure.
The divergence was geographic and structural: the actuation chokepoint — the bearings, reducers and servos that Japanese suppliers dominate — was the day's weak link. THK (THKLY), the linear-motion leader, fell 8.6% to $21.13 in its latest Tokyo session, the basket's laggard, with reducer-maker Nabtesco (NCTKY) off 4.2% to $15.78. Among domestic names, industrial-software house PTC (PTC) was the notable decliner, down 3.3% to $120.77 with no company headline. The read is that the motion-control tier, priced on Japanese machine-tool order cycles rather than US AI beta, moved to a different clock than the semiconductor-driven names that led.
The calendar is dense. Tesla (TSLA) reports Q2 today, July 22; Teradyne (TER) follows July 28, and PTC and TE Connectivity (TEL) on July 29. Nabtesco (NCTKY) posts first-half results July 31 and NSK on August 3 — the Japanese motion-control reads that will show whether Tuesday's ADR weakness reflects a real order slowdown. Cognex (CGNX), the machine-vision chokepoint, reports August 5. Tesla's summer Optimus Gen 3 reveal and low-volume production start remains the sector's marquee humanoid catalyst.
