The Japanese precision-gear chokepoint rebounded — Nabtesco's ADR jumped 8.5% and the bearing-and-linear-motion tier ran with it — while Tesla slipped 3% into its Q2 print and micro-cap Knightscope led the tape down.
Nabtesco's US ADR (NCTKY) rebounded 8.5% to $15.78, recovering the prior week's drop and leading the basket. It sits on a genuine chokepoint: RV cycloidal reducers, roughly 60% of the market for medium-to-large industrial robots and the precision-gear layer every articulated arm and humanoid joint depends on. The move was a thin-ADR bounce tracking Tokyo rather than fresh news, but the whole Japanese precision-motion tier ran with it — NSK, the bearing maker (NPSKY), +4.7% to $14.13, and THK, the linear-motion name (THKLY), +3.9% to $23.11 — after the tier was routed in the prior session. Nabtesco reports H1 results on July 31.
The laggard was the end-market. Knightscope (KSCP), the autonomous-security-robot maker, fell 4.8% to $1.40, the basket's biggest decliner — a thin micro-cap with no catalyst that trades as the highest-beta expression of robotics sentiment. The more structural softness was in the domestic precision-motion chokepoint: Novanta (NOVT), the photonics-and-precision-motion name, -3.5% to $143.55, and Timken (TKR), the bearing maker, -2.5% to $134.38 — the mirror image of the Japanese tier's bounce.
Autonomy-compute was bid. Ambarella (AMBA), the edge-AI vision-SoC link that gives a robot its perception, rose 6.2% to $65.70, and Teradyne (TER), the test-and-automation chokepoint, +3.5% to $333.76. The humanoid integrators were mixed to soft: Tesla (TSLA) -3.0% to $369.57 ahead of its Q2 report and Optimus reveal, Serve Robotics +2.0%, Symbotic -1.0%. The rare-earth-magnet link under every servo was mixed — Nidec (motors) +0.5%, MP Materials +1.0%, USA Rare Earth (USAR) -2.7%. With the Nasdaq near flat and small-caps defensive, the session split tier-by-tier rather than directionally.
The calendar front-loads the humanoid story. Tesla's Q2 lands July 22, with the Optimus Gen-3 reveal and low-volume production start guided for around August 1 — the single biggest humanoid catalyst ahead. Teradyne reports July 28; PTC and TE Connectivity July 29; Nabtesco's H1 July 31; NSK August 3; Cognex, the machine-vision name, August 5; Harmonic Drive, the strain-wave-reducer maker, August 6. That sequence tests whether the precision-gear bounce was a reflex or the start of a re-rate on humanoid order flow.
