An open-source-EDA chip demo hit the simulation-software chokepoint hardest and the Japanese-Korean precision-gear tier was routed, while the actuator link held green.

Leadership held at the actuation layer. Moog (MOG.A) rose 2.8% to $393.31 — the precision-actuator and motion-control name that is the muscle of any humanoid or robotic arm — one of the few green marks in a session defined by a software shock upstream of it. The actuator chokepoint is capital-intensive and slow to substitute, and on a day when the design-tools tier cracked, the market kept paying for the hardware that turns a design into force.

The laggard was the simulation-and-design chokepoint. Synopsys (SNPS) fell 7.9% to $384.28 — the EDA-software name whose tools design the chips inside every robot — after Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3, which the company said autonomously designed a chip using open-source EDA tools, a direct challenge to the pricing power of proprietary design software. Intraday the stock was down as much as ~12% before recovering part of it, with the broad semiconductor selloff amplifying the move. The read is structural, not a one-day scare: the moat around design-tool licensing is the exact assumption the demo targeted.

The damage ran hardest through the precision-gear tier. Harmonic Drive (HSYDF), the strain-wave-gear maker, fell 7.5% to $40.00; Nabtesco's ADR (NCTKY), the cycloidal-reducer name, −6.5% to $14.55; NSK's ADR (NPSKY), the linear-motion link, −5.3% to $13.50; and Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) −6.1% to ₩399,000 in Seoul. The reducers and bearings every humanoid joint needs are the tightest bottleneck in the drivetrain, and they took the brunt of the Japan-Korea risk-off tape. Qualcomm (QCOM), the edge-AI-compute link, held +0.7% to $171.78.

The catalysts land fast. Tesla reports Q2 on July 22 with Optimus color the market will parse closely; Teradyne follows July 28, TE Connectivity and PTC on July 29, Nabtesco's H1 on July 31, NSK on August 3, Cognex on August 5, and Symbotic on August 6. The set-piece is Tesla's Optimus Gen 3 reveal and low-volume production start, estimated for early August — the clearest near-term test of whether the actuator-and-gear chokepoint is being ordered at scale or still being prototyped.
