Edge-AI silicon and the humanoid-joint gear chokepoint led the robotics basket — Ambarella +28%, Harmonic Drive +13.1%, Nabtesco +9%, Regal Rexnord +8.3% — while Lynas's rare-earth line lagged at −2.9%.
Ambarella (AMBA) led the robotics basket on Tuesday, up 28.0% to $85.80, a momentum-driven surge on edge-AI enthusiasm rather than a single hard catalyst — the move followed the company's recent record edge-AI quarter and a set of late-June institutional roadshow meetings. For robotics, Ambarella occupies the edge-AI-compute chokepoint: the perception silicon that lets a machine see and act inside a constrained power and thermal budget, the same bottleneck whether the platform flies or walks. On a session that rewarded AI silicon across every vertical, AMBA was the purest expression of it in the robot universe.
The more robot-native story was the precision-gear chokepoint, which rallied almost as hard. Harmonic Drive Systems (HSYDF) rose 13.1% to $51.00 and Nabtesco (NCTKY) 9.0% to $16.88 in their own sessions — the two names that own the strain-wave and RV-cycloidal reducers at the heart of every humanoid joint, with Nabtesco holding roughly 60% of the medium-to-large industrial-robot reducer market. Regal Rexnord (RRX) added 8.3% to $238.19 on the actuators-and-motors side, where its Kollmorgen frameless torque motors feed humanoid joint modules. The bid tracks the humanoid production ramp narrative as Tesla's Optimus V3 moves toward its mid-year debut and third-quarter volume, a demand pull the concentrated gear suppliers are positioned to capture.
Lynas (LYSCF) was the laggard, down 2.9% to $12.41, the magnet-material end of the chain slipping while the gear-and-actuator end led. Lynas is the largest ex-China rare-earth separator and the only commercial producer of dysprosium and terbium oxide outside China — the heavy-rare-earth feed for the permanent magnets inside those same actuators — so the divergence is a rotation within the supply chain, not a repudiation of it. Elsewhere the platform and vision names firmed: Symbotic (SYM) +6.7% to $44.95 on warehouse-automation integration, Cognex (CGNX) +5.9% to $72.42 on machine vision, and Humanoid (HUMN) +5.1% to $35.25. The soft spots were the edge-connectivity and battery names — Qualcomm (QCOM) −2.1%, Hyundai's Seoul line (005380.KS) −1.5%, Enovix (ENVX) −0.5%.
The next hard catalysts are Tesla-anchored. Tesla reports Q2 on July 22, with commentary on the Optimus ramp the key read for the entire actuator-and-gear complex, and an Optimus Gen 3 reveal with low-volume production start is targeted around August 1. Nabtesco's H1 lands July 31, Symbotic's Q3 on August 6, and Harmonic Drive's quarterly around August 6 — the first hard prints on whether humanoid orders are converting into reducer volume.
