Tokyo's precision-motion chokepoint rallied — Harmonic Drive up 11% — even as Seoul's circuit-breaker crash dragged Boston Dynamics parent Hyundai down 12%.
The leadership came from Japan's motion-control complex, the literal joints of the humanoid thesis. Harmonic Drive Systems' US line (HSYDF) rose 11.0% to $54.50 — its Tokyo line (6324) has gained roughly 35% in a week — as a "physical AI" rally swept the Japanese precision names. Harmonic Drive owns the strain-wave reduction gear that sits in nearly every robot wrist and joint, the single hardest component in the precision-gears chokepoint to second-source. The move is best read as that name's most recent Tokyo session, not the US Monday tape, but the signal is the same one re-rating Fanuc, Yaskawa and Nabtesco: investors are pricing the bodies that AI will inhabit, not just the models.
The laggard was a different Asian session telling the opposite story. In Seoul's Tuesday cash session, Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) fell 12.0% to KRW 511,000 as the KOSPI triggered circuit breakers twice and closed down roughly 10% on a leveraged-product unwind and AI-valuation fears; affiliate Kia fell 6.4%. Hyundai is the basket's private-giants chokepoint — it controls Boston Dynamics, the most advanced Western humanoid platform short of Tesla — so a market-structure air-pocket in Seoul reprices that exposure regardless of anything on the robotics roadmap.
The rest of the Japanese motion complex moved with Harmonic Drive — THK (THKLY +10.1%, linear motion), Nabtesco (NCTKY +7.9%, cycloidal gears), Yaskawa (YASKY +4.9%, servos) and Fanuc (FANUY +3.7%) — a coherent Tokyo bid across the actuators-and-gears strait. On the US tape, the automation enablers firmed (Teradyne TER +4.4%, Allegro MicroSystems ALGM +4.4%) while the AI-platform owners and warehouse names lagged: Alphabet (GOOGL −5.0%, the Intrinsic/Waymo parent) and Symbotic (SYM −3.6%) fell, and Tesla (TSLA +1.1%) was roughly flat ahead of its Optimus catalyst.
The calendar is humanoid-heavy into late summer. Tesla's Q2 on July 22 frames an Optimus Gen 3 reveal and low-volume production start targeted for around August 1; Teradyne reports July 28 and Harmonic Drive's fiscal-Q1 print lands August 6. Further out, Hyundai's Q3 is estimated for October 27, the ABB Robotics divestiture to SoftBank is expected to close mid-to-late 2026, and an anticipated Boston Dynamics IPO-decision window sits around December — the next hard read on the private-giants chokepoint.
